Workshops
Shibori For Texture
1 day workshop
Throughout the day students will have the opportunity to produce
a series of experimental samples exploring a variety of ways to
heat-set and manipulate fabric. This will be achieved through the
use of shibori wrapping and stitching - encompassing both
  traditional and modern techniques.
Students will have the opportunity to colour some of their samples
with silk paints as well as oil paint sticks, highlighting the relief
patterns created by the fabric manipulation. Stitching and binding
methods will be demonstrated throughout the day.
Basic materials and equipment are supplied but students
  are also required to provide:-
• Sewing needles • small embroidery scissors
  • strong white or cream cotton and polyester thread
    • rubber gloves • apron/overall • newspaper • small
    paintbrushes
    • any small metal/glass/wooden objects which
    students might like
to experiment wrapping into fabric • a variety of natural and
synthetic fibre fabrics for wrapping and heat setting
(white or cream silk in varying weights will produce excellent
  painted results; polyester fabrics can be permanently heat set;
students may also wish to bring velvets, denim and muslin).
 2 or 3 day workshop
As for the one day workshop, but leading into personal
development through work on an individual theme or project such
as a wrap, wall hanging, or cushion cover. Further opportunity
for testing wrapping and colouring results with different fabrics
and objects will also be given. Students may bring images to
inspire them, or choose colours and textures on the day.
Basic materials and equipment are supplied but students
are also required to provide materials and equipment as
listed for the one day workshop with the addition of :-
• Several larger pieces of silk or polyester fabric from which your
cushion cover or wrap are to be produced - allow for shrinkage.
  •
Sewing machine* with necessary feet (i.e. Hemmer Foot* for
edging material for wraps/scarves, Dual Feed Foot/Walking Foot*
or Teflon Foot* for sewing 3D shibori fabric to cushion back)
as well as any basic feet you may require to use.
  Suitable machine sewing thread.
*The sewing machine and feet are not essential as these stages
  can be completed by hand.
The following details apply to the above workshops:-
Silk paints and oil paint sticks in addition to some fabric samples
will be supplied at a cost of £ 3.00 per student/per day.
A large variety of objects for wrapping may be borrowed during
the workshop. Habotai silk, polyester fabrics, and a variety of
small objects for wrapping will be available to buy throughout
  the workshop.

The above workshops may be booked in conjunction with Shibori for Pattern, and/or
  Michelle's lectures.

The World Shibori Network multi-cultural children's shibori
T-shirt project currently run by Michelle Griffiths (UK) and
Hiroshi Murase (Japan) is being extended in order that
individual schools, colleges, youth groups, and families
may take part. It is anticipated that work produced by
these groups will be exhibited as mass installation in 2008.
To date we have had enquiries from many groups not only
throughout the UK & Ireland, but also as far-afield as India,
    Thailand, Uganda, America, and Germany.
